The Design That Started Everything

I feel like I say this about all of my designs. But this one is different.

The Crystal Ball collection is where everything began. The idea came a year or so before I actually created it. The design itself first appeared in the spring of 2020, and yes, I did have to check my Instagram to confirm exactly when. Does time fly or what? The concept was this: a tarot card that was an invitation. Not just a tarot-inspired design. An actual card, in shape and in form, with the weight and presence of something you would pull from a real deck. I think we absolutely smashed it. And I say that as the person who drew every line of it.

That original design led to everything else. Every collection, every product, every wedding we have been part of since. It all started here.

Sitting somewhere between gothic and boho, whimsical and witchy, the Crystal Ball collection is a perfect balance of magic and the otherworldly. It suits couples who want something that feels genuinely enchanted without going full dark romance. Foiled or unfoiled, it holds its own in any form.

The Very First Design | The Story Behind Crystal Ball

The concept behind this collection is one I had been turning over for a while before it became real. What if the invitation itself was a tarot card? Not inspired by one. Not styled like one. Actually one, in the traditional portrait format, with the weight and the presence of something you would pull from a deck.

The crystal ball felt like the right centrepiece. A symbol of the unseen, the anticipated, the moment before everything changes. Which is exactly what a wedding invitation is, really.

From that one design, the whole Birdhouse197 universe grew. The Lovers Tarot, 'Til Death Do Us Part, the Bleeding Heart, the celestial collections. None of it exists without this. So when I say it holds a special place in my heart, I genuinely mean it.

A Little Touch of Magic | The Predict a Song Detail

One of my personal favourite details in this collection lives on the reverse of the RSVP card in the 3-piece suite.

Instead of a blank back, we print the crystal ball illustration with the words "Predict a Song" and a space for your guests to write their request. It is the easiest way to guarantee a dance floor that actually works. Not all predictions come true, of course. But most of them do.

It is a small detail. But it is the kind of small detail that people talk about long after the wedding is done.

Whimsical Wedding Invitations

The Crystal Ball collection sits at a crossroads that very few wedding stationery designs occupy. It is witchy without being dark. Bohemian without being rustic. Whimsical without being twee. That balance is genuinely difficult to achieve in illustration and it is something I am proud of every time I look at this design.
