Embrace the Elegance of a Goth Wedding

There's a moment when you're planning a goth wedding where everything clicks. The colour palette stops being a compromise and starts being a conviction. The flowers are black dahlias, not white roses. The candles outnumber the fairy lights. And the invitations don't just announce your wedding day. They set the scene for it.

Joshua and I got married in October 2022, and from the very beginning we knew we wanted something that felt genuinely us. Dark, atmospheric, a little theatrical. Not a traditional wedding with gothic touches bolted on.

For our save the dates we used our own Celestial Sun & Moon collection, gold foil on black, which set the tone immediately. For on-the-day stationery we designed a bespoke heart gatefold card in two versions: a deep green for day guests and midnight blue for evening guests, both carrying the colour story forward from our invitations into the day itself. It's one of the things we're most proud of, and it showed us first-hand how much continuity across the suite matters at a gothic wedding.

What actually makes a goth wedding a goth wedding?

The aesthetic varies more than people expect. Some goth weddings are Victorian mourning-inspired, all jet jewellery and deep burgundy. Some are celestial and occult, tarot cards and moon phases woven through every detail. Others are pure dark romance. Black lace, candlelight, and a ceremony that feels like it belongs somewhere between a fairytale and a fever dream. What they share is intentionality. Nothing is accidental. Every choice means something.

The stationery matters more at a goth wedding than almost any other style, because the visual language is so specific. A generic off-the-shelf invite immediately breaks the spell. Your guests should open the envelope and already understand what kind of day they're being invited into.

Finding the right stationery for your goth wedding

At Birdhouse197, every collection we've designed has a goth wedding somewhere in its DNA.

Our Til Death Do Us Part collection is the most direct expression of gothic wedding invitations done properly. Skull motifs, gold foil, unapologetically dark. If you're drawn to something more celestial and occult, Celestial Sun & Moon and Dusk & Dawn work beautifully for weddings that blend gothic atmosphere with tarot and astrology influences.

'Til Death Do Us Part' Tarot Full Invitation with RSVP in black and white, featuring skeleton design and order of the day details.

For couples who want dark romance without full gothic severity, The Bleeding Heart and In This Life & The Next both hit that note. Deeply romantic, with enough edge to feel like genuinely alternative wedding stationery rather than mainstream with a dark filter applied.

All of our collections are available with your choice of gold, silver, copper, rose gold, or iridescent foil. Gold reads opulent and vampiric. Iridescent reads otherworldly. Silver reads cold and elegant. It's worth thinking about which direction your wider wedding aesthetic is heading before you choose.

Don't forget the full suite

Beyond the invitations, the full suite matters at a goth wedding. Save the dates arriving months before build anticipation and give guests a taste of what's coming. On-the-day stationery, including menus, place cards, and welcome boards, keeps the visual world cohesive right through to the evening. We design everything as a matching suite so nothing feels disconnected on the day.

"Dusk & Dawn" foiled tarot card 3 piece invitation suite with customizable colors, featuring three cards including RSVP and order of the day details.

If you're planning a goth wedding and want gothic wedding invitations that genuinely reflect your aesthetic rather than approximate it, we'd love to hear from you. Explore all our collections or get in touch directly. We work with every couple personally from first enquiry through to delivery.

Love, George and Joshua 🔮
