Red and Black Wedding Inspiration | Birdhouse197
There's a moment in planning a wedding like this where everything clicks. The colour palette stops being a compromise and starts being a conviction. Black dahlias instead of white roses. Candles outnumbering fairy lights.
Red and black is that conviction at its boldest. Deeply romantic, a little dangerous, and impossible to mistake for anyone else's day. Here's how we'd approach a red and black wedding, starting with the stationery.
The Bleeding Heart | Red and Black Wedding Invitations

We'll be honest, this one is personal. We designed the original Bleeding Heart gatefold for our own wedding in October 2022, and it's grown into one of the most developed ranges we make.
It's an anatomical heart with Victorian memento mori energy, and in red on black it's exactly as dramatic as it sounds. There are gatefold invitations, save the dates, circular save the dates, menus, welcome signs and thank you cards personalised with your own photograph.

Star-Crossed Lovers | A Romantic Red and Black Wedding

Bleeding hearts and crossed swords, Romeo and Juliet at its core, deeply romantic and deeply gothic without one undermining the other. At a wedding fair years ago, someone stopped at our stand and told us it reminded them of Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet. We never forgot that.
The foiled save the date is one of very few designs where the entire front is foiled. Holding one for the first time genuinely stops you in your tracks. See the Star-Crossed Lovers collection.
Blood Red, Burgundy or Somewhere in Between
Red isn't one colour. We colour match, so if you have a specific palette in mind, whether that's a bright blood red or a deep burgundy and black, we'll build your suite around it.
Every design can be printed in any colour or gradient, and an interesting gradient can completely transform a design. It's one of the easiest ways to make it feel unmistakably yours.
“We went with a deep red to black gradient and we have gotten SO many compliments about how our invites are the coolest ones anyone has ever gotten.”

Add gold foil on selected designs and it tips into full gothic opulence. Gold reads opulent and a little vampiric, which is rather the point. Have a look at our foil wedding invitations to see where it's available.
Red and Black Wedding Ideas Beyond the Stationery
The stationery does the heavy lifting, but the details around it matter. A few things that consistently work well for this kind of wedding:
- Deep jewel toned florals. Dark burgundy roses, black dahlias, deep plum. Nothing pastel.
- Candlelight wherever the venue allows it. This palette lives in low light.
- A welcome sign that sets the tone before guests even walk in.
- Table settings that match the invitations. Menu cards and place cards in the same red, so the whole table feels considered.
We learned this at our own wedding. Nothing felt disconnected. A guest could pick up any piece of stationery from the day and know exactly which wedding it belonged to.
